Blackjack, often referred to as twenty-one, stands as one of the most popular casino banking games globally. This comparing card game involves a player competing against the dealer, utilizing one or more standard decks comprising 52 cards.
Each player receives an initial hand of two cards, with the objective of achieving a card total closest to 21 points without exceeding that number. In this game, face cards (Kings, Queens, and Jacks) are each valued at ten points. Players and the dealer can value an Ace as either 1 or 11 points, while all other cards retain their face value. Following the distribution of their initial two cards, players may choose to 'hit'—requesting additional cards in an attempt to reach or approach 21 without exceeding it, a scenario known as 'busting.' Notably, if a player’s Ace is counted as 11 points, their hand is termed 'soft,' providing an advantage since they cannot bust by drawing additional cards; conversely, a hand without this flexibility is classified as 'hard.'
The dealer must continue to draw cards until reaching a total of 17 or higher. It is important to note that some casinos require the dealer to hit on a 'soft' 17 (an Ace valued as 11 in combination with a six). Players who refrain from busting and possess a higher total than the dealer will emerge victorious. If the dealer exceeds 21 points or holds a lesser hand than a non-busting player, they lose; similarly, if both parties achieve equal totals, the result is termed a 'push,' allowing players to neither win nor lose funds for that round.
Blackjack has numerous rule variations and has been targeted by advantage players since the 1960s, notably card counters who monitor dealt cards and adjust their strategies accordingly. Additionally, other casino games have drawn inspiration from blackjack, such as Spanish 21 and pontoon. It is also worth mentioning that the recreational British card game known as 'black jack' is entirely unrelated to this variant.
